Sexual assault survivors criticize Ontario government for slow progress on crucial bill

Image
Cait Alexander, a survivor of sexual assault and passionate advocate, made the journey from Los Angeles to Toronto to witness a debate inside the Ontario legislature on Tuesday. Her motivation stemmed from a deep desire to see reform within Ontario's court system, a system she had personally struggled through as a victim during her 20s. Her hope was pinned on a proposed law that she believed could finally bring about the changes necessary to make a difference. However, upon her arrival in Toronto and as the Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) prepared to discuss the legislation, the government made a sudden decision to send the bill to be considered by a committee without allowing any time for debate. This move left Alexander feeling disheartened, as she expressed her frustration by stating, “Games are typically for children... it’s bewildering that I have to say this: human suffering and human lives are not a game. Yet, here we are, playing a dangerous one with the Canadian

125th anniversary celebration of the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

Image
The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Castries, ordained on May 17, 1899, is set to celebrate with a series of planned activities by the Roman Catholic Church. Cathedral Administrator, Fr. Stephen Quinlan, will be leading the services this weekend, with church members from all corners of Saint Lucia expected to join in the festivities. According to Fr. Quinlan, there will be no Mass on Sunday, May 19, at the Minor Basilica, but an evening Mass at 4pm will be held instead. He extended an invitation to everyone to come and commemorate this historic event with them. The decision not to hold the regular Sunday Mass on May 19 was explained as a means to allow other parishes to conduct their regular services in the morning. Monsignor Patrick Anthony provided a brief history of the Cathedral's construction in the 1890s, citing its beginnings in 1894 when Father Tapon, known for St. Mary's College and the Cathedral, took a loan of £3000 to start the construction. Mgr. A

Footage shows P. Diddy allegedly assaulting singer Cassie in hotel room

The footage showed Combs, wearing only a white towel, physically assaulting Cassie, his protege and longtime girlfriend at the time. The video depicted Combs punching, kicking, shoving, and dragging Cassie, as well as throwing a vase in her direction. The disturbing nature of the video raised concerns and brought attention to the allegations of sexual abuse and violence that Cassie had previously made against Combs in a lawsuit filed in November of the same year. The security video from March 5, 2016, closely resembled the incident described in Cassie's lawsuit, which accused Combs of years of sexual abuse and violence. The lawsuit was settled the day after it was filed, but it led to further legal action against Combs. Multiple lawsuits were filed in the months following the initial suit, and a federal criminal sex-traffic

We spoke with supervisors at the supermarkets who could not say if the prices had been adjusted on the shelves to reflect the reduced prices as announced by the producer. Nutrimix Flour Mills (Nutrimix) notified supermarkets on May 2 about its decision to institute price reductions on its products ranging from five to 17 per cent, due to a global decrease in wheat prices and shipping costs. At the grocery stores we visited, prices on Nutrimix 2kg flour ranged from $15.50 to $15.99. Country Pride 10kg flour (all purpose and baker’s blends) ranged from $77 to $81. Nutrimix produces domestic grade and industrial/commercial grade

Brazil selected as the host country for the 2027 Women's World Cup

Image
The 2027 Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil after FIFA's full membership voted in favor of the South American bid over a joint proposal from Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany. The decision came after the withdrawal of a joint bid by the United States and Mexico last month, and South Africa's earlier withdrawal of its candidacy. This will mark the first time that the global women's tournament, first held in 1991, will be staged in South America. Brazil's victory in securing the hosting rights for the 2027 Women's World Cup was seen as a strategic move by FIFA, following deals brokered for the men's World Cups of 2030 and 2034. With the majority of the 2030 tournament games set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, South American neighbors Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will only have one game each. The decision was also influenced by the need to facilitate Saudi Arabia's uncontested hosting of the 2034 World Cup through a fast-track pr

Marler was accused of beating the kindergartener to death by "smacking" and "clapping" the child's head between her hands. Despite Marler's claims that she confessed to the crime just to end the police interview, the jury did not believe her defense during the week-long trial. Minutes show intense Executive conflict between Foster and Mallon during Covid inquiry

Image
Former Northern Ireland first minister Baroness Arlene Foster clashed bitterly with Executive colleague Nichola Mallon during a meeting at which ministers disagreed over an extension to lockdown measures during the pandemic. Minutes from the meeting of the Stormont Executive, on November 9, 2020, show Ms Mallon of the SDLP accusing the DUP of putting lives “in danger”. Lady Foster, who led the DUP at the time, hit back saying, “only Covid deaths matter to SDLP”. The handwritten notes from the meeting were published on the website of the Covid-19 Inquiry on Wednesday evening. Much of the evidence heard while the inquiry has been sitting in Belfast has focused on the fractious series of Executive meetings over four days in November 2020 when ministers struggled to agree on a two-week, circuit-breaker extension to restrictions, as recommended by health officials. The DUP, which was concerned about the economic effect of continued closures of close-contact services and coffee shops, tri
