Indianapolis Man Found Guilty of Attempted Murder and Battery in 2022

An Indianapolis man, Bernard McGuire, was recently convicted for attempted murder, aggravated battery, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced McGuire's convictions following a two-day trial in which he was found guilty of attempted murder and aggravated battery, both serious felony charges. Additionally, McGuire was also convicted of habitual offender enhancement and firearms enhancement related to the incident that took place in January 2022. The events leading to McGuire's conviction unfolded on January 2, 2022, when officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a shooting incident at an apartment in the 4300 block of Village Parkway Circle West Drive. Upon their arrival, they discovered a victim with a gunshot wound to the neck, who was in critical condition and had to be rushed to a local hospital. A neighbor who provided assistance to the victim reported seeing McGuire leaving the apartment and fleeing in a blue Dodge Challenger. The victim, while seeking help, identified McGuire as the perpetrator by pointing at him and saying, “He shot me.” Following the victim's identification of McGuire, a law enforcement officer spotted the blue vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, leading to McGuire's detention and subsequent transport to the IMPD aggravated assault office. Two days after the incident, on January 4, 2022, the victim was able to provide a statement to investigators detailing the events that transpired. According to her account, she was visiting McGuire at his apartment to assist him in taking down a Christmas tree. However, McGuire unexpectedly turned violent when he retrieved a rifle from the bedroom, aimed it at her, and fired a shot. In a moment of panic, she tried to call 911, but McGuire seized the phone and uttered, “I didn’t mean to do that,” further solidifying his culpability in the shooting incident. The upcoming sentencing hearing for McGuire has been scheduled for June 20 at 1 p.m., where the court will determine the appropriate consequences for his crimes. Given the severity of the charges brought against him, McGuire faces the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence as well as additional penalties imposed due to the habitual offender enhancement and firearms enhancement associated with the case. The successful conviction of McGuire serves as a testament to the effective investigative work carried out by law enforcement officers and prosecutors in bringing justice to victims of violent crimes in the Indianapolis community. https://therealcrimediary.com/indianapolis-man-found-guilty-of-attempted-murder-and-battery-in-2022/?feed_id=57375&_unique_id=66d3e7013cf89
