Brave young victim stops man's attempted murder; suspect jailed

Image
Craig McQuillian, a 44-year-old individual, was sentenced to six years in prison for attempting to murder a man and a young boy by starting a fire outside their high-rise flat. The incident occurred at the 14-storey Fidra Court building in Edinburgh on November 12. McQuillian was captured on CCTV carrying a metal crowbar, a plastic bag with petrol, and was seen setting fire to the door of one of the flats, before fleeing the scene. The attack was well-planned as he targeted the victims when most residents would have been asleep in bed. Fortunately, the occupants of the flat, a young boy and a man, were able to escape harm. The young boy detected the smell of burning and raised the alarm, allowing the man to extinguish the flames with a wet towel before they could spread. McQuillian admitted to one charge of wilful fire-raising, danger to life, and attempted murder in court. The sentencing took place at the High Court in Edinburgh, where he received a six-year prison term. Moira Orr...

Letters from Admitted Serial Killer Sent to Inmate to be Heard in Winnipeg Trial

Image
Crown prosecutors are set to wrap up their evidence Wednesday in the trial of a Winnipeg man who has admitted to killing four Indigenous women. Court is expected to hear about letters Jeremy Skibicki sent to an inmate about the charges he's facing. Skibicki has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the 2022 slayings of Rebecca Contois, Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, and an unidentified woman Indigenous leaders have named Buffalo Woman. His lawyers say he killed the women but argue he should be found not criminally responsible due to mental illness. Prosecutors say the killings were racially motivated, and Skibicki preyed on the vulnerable victims at homeless shelters. Skibicki's lawyers have said an expert will later testify to Skibicki's mental state at the time of the killings. The trial of Jeremy Skibicki, who confessed to killing four Indigenous women, is reaching its conclusion as Crown prosecutors present their final evidence. Skibicki is facing charges of f...

Ex-Subpostmaster Emails Vennells: "I Wonder What Kind of God You Worship"

This communication took place in 2015, where McCormack provided clear evidence of the problem and expressed frustration over the lack of action from the Post Office. The email correspondence between McCormack and Vennells was then brought to the attention of Post Office lawyer Rodric Williams. Williams suggested responding to McCormack with a standard reply and dismissed him as someone not worthy of serious consideration. Norfolk man found guilty of killing cousin with two previous murder convictions

Image
A Norfolk man, Cola Beale, was convicted of his third murder on Wednesday. This time, Beale was found guilty of the first-degree murder of his cousin, Downing McLean in Norfolk. Beale's criminal history includes two prior convictions from Virginia Beach in March 2022 for murdering his girlfriend, Czavi'er Hill, and the man he considered his father, Clifton Baxter. Testimony in court revealed that McLean was present during those murders and Beale admitted to killing his cousin days later after refusing to carry out a murder on his cousin's behalf. McLean was shot once in the mouth and once in the back. Beale's defense attorneys attempted to argue that his actions were manslaughter, not murder, but the court ultimately found him guilty of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The previous coverage of Beale's second murder trial in Norfolk, where he was found guilty in the two Virginia Beach homicides, sheds light on his pattern...

What insights were gained on the first day of Paula Vennells' testimony as ex-Post Office boss?

Image
Former Post Office boss Paula Vennells has finally broken her almost decade-long silence on the Horizon scandal as she faced intense scrutiny on her management during her tenure. The inquiry room at Aldwych House in London set the stage for her emotionally charged testimony, where Ms Vennells broke down twice under the probing questions from Jason Beer KC, the counsel to the Horizon IT Inquiry. Her admission of making a false statement to Members of Parliament marked a pivotal moment in the proceedings, revealing the depth of the issues faced by subpostmasters under her leadership. During her interrogation at the hearing, Ms Vennells was faced with a barrage of accusations, including allegations of a cover-up by Dame Moya Greene, the former Royal Mail Group chief executive. The revelation that Ms Vennells was accused of knowing about IT errors in the Horizon system by Dame Moya added a layer of complexity to her defense, leading to a tense exchange between the two prominent figures....

Government to permanently take over 'Unsafe' prison

Image
A prison branded unsafe by inspectors will be permanently taken over by the Government. In December, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) intervened to take control of HMP Lowdham Grange in Nottinghamshire and appointed a new governor to improve safety and security at the prison. This move came after warnings about the conditions at the jail, which holds up to 900 men, were raised by the prisons watchdog earlier in the year. The arrangement, initially described as interim, has now been confirmed by the MoJ to become permanent, with a formal handover scheduled for the summer. Additionally, the former private contractor, Sodexo, will pay a settlement to cover the cost of the Government's intervention. The decision to permanently take over HMP Lowdham Grange was made after the MoJ stepped in to provide extra support and improve conditions. Prisons Minister Edward Argar emphasized the need for swift action to address the specific challenges faced by the troubled prison. The takeover is see...

The decision was announced by a three-judge panel a week prior to the sentencing. The date set for execution was November 27, although it is unlikely to be carried out due to the automatic appeal process in capital cases and the current moratorium on executions in the state. Despite this, Judge Greg Howard emphasized that the formal requirements of the law mandated the setting of a date. The tragic events unfolded on April 28, 2019, when the 41-year-old former truck driver fatally shot his wife, Shalinderjit Kaur, his in-laws, Hakikat Singh Pannag and Parmjit Kaur, and his aunt-in-law, Amarjit Kaur, inside their home on Wyntree Drive in West Chester Twp. This act of violence occurred after Singh's first trial resulted in a hung jury in October 2022. As the sentences were impos...
