Altus resident found guilty of providing false information in firearms transaction
The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) recently announced the conviction of an Altus man for lying during the purchase of a firearm. Angel Luis Garcia-Navedo, 27, of Altus, was found guilty after a bench trial of making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm. The case against Garcia-Navedo began on August 16, 2023, when a federal grand jury returned a two-count Indictment against him, charging him with making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm and with illegal receipt of a firearm by a person under indictment. The case proceeded to a bench trial on May 14, 2024, and Garcia-Navedo was ultimately found guilty by the Court.
During the trial, it was revealed that in April 2023, Garcia-Navedo visited an Altus federal firearm licensee (FFL) to purchase a rifle. To complete the purchase, he had to fill out Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Form 4473, which includes questions about the buyer’s competency, criminal history, drug use, immigration status, and history with domestic violence. Making false statements in connection with purchasing or attempting to purchase a firearm is prohibited by federal law. Garcia-Navedo indicated on the ATF Form 4473 that he was not under indictment or information for a felony or a crime for which he could be imprisoned for more than one year, despite public records showing that he was charged with two felony offenses in Jackson County District Court at the time.
As a result of his guilty verdict, Garcia-Navedo faces sentencing with up to 10 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. This case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of providing false information during the purchase of firearms and the importance of complying with all ATF regulations and laws. It also highlights the efforts of the DOJ to uphold the integrity of firearm transactions and prevent individuals under indictment from acquiring firearms illegally.
The conviction of Garcia-Navedo sends a strong message about the DOJ’s commitment to enforcing laws related to firearm purchases and ensuring that individuals comply with all legal requirements. By holding individuals accountable for lying during firearm purchases, the DOJ aims to prevent illegal gun transactions and enhance public safety. This case serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to provide false information during the purchase of firearms and emphasizes the serious consequences that can result from such actions.
Overall, the conviction of Angel Luis Garcia-Navedo in this case underscores the importance of honesty and compliance with legal requirements when purchasing firearms. The DOJ’s successful prosecution of individuals who provide false information during gun purchases helps maintain the integrity of the firearms market and prevents potentially dangerous individuals from obtaining firearms unlawfully. Moving forward, it is essential for all individuals to understand and adhere to the laws and regulations governing firearm purchases to ensure public safety and prevent illegal activities related to firearms.
