DEM and Sagicor to collaborate on hurricane awareness open day set for June 1

The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) is partnering with Sagicor General Insurance Inc. to host the DEM and Sagicor Hurricane Awareness Open Day on June 1st in Queen’s Park, Constitution Road, St. Michael. The event will take place from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and aims to raise awareness about hurricanes and the importance of early warning and action in saving lives. The day will kick off with a press conference to officially launch the 2024 Hurricane Awareness Month, scheduled to run throughout June under the theme "Early Warning, Early Action, Saves Lives!" Director of the DEM, Kerry Hinds, will be giving remarks at the press conference alongside Deputy Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services, Brian Murray, who will provide an updated forecast for the upcoming hurricane season. Representatives from Sagicor and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction will also be presenting at the event. The Open Day will feature a variety of activities for both children and adults, including a children’s reading corner, jumping tents, quizzes, and competitions. There will be numerous exhibitors on site, such as the Barbados Meteorological Services, the Barbados Fire Service, the Barbados Defence Force, the Environmental Health Department, the Barbados Water Authority, and the Barbados Light and Power Company. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the DEM's hurricane-ready house and take pictures with Hurricane Ready Eddy. Additionally, there will be interactive hurricane games with chances to win prizes and giveaways. Free health checks will be offered by doctors and nurses from the BDF Field Medical Team. The event is part of the efforts to raise awareness about hurricane preparedness as the Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1st and lasts until November 30th each year. The event aims to educate the public about the importance of being prepared for hurricanes and other natural disasters. With interactive activities for all ages, attendees can learn valuable information while having fun. The presence of various exhibitors, including key emergency response agencies and utility companies, will provide valuable resources and information to help individuals and families prepare for any potential disasters. The opportunity to engage with experts in the field and participate in interactive games adds an element of excitement to the day's events. As part of the Hurricane Awareness Month activities, the open day serves as a platform to kick off a month-long campaign focusing on the theme of "Early Warning, Early Action, Saves Lives." The partnership between DEM and Sagicor General Insurance Inc. underscores the importance of collaboration between public and private organizations in promoting disaster preparedness and response. By providing updated forecasts and valuable information, the event aims to empower individuals to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their communities during the hurricane season. The event promises to be both educational and entertaining, offering a day of learning and fun for all who attend. https://therealcrimediary.com/dem-and-sagicor-to-collaborate-on-hurricane-awareness-open-day-set-for-june-1/?feed_id=76050&_unique_id=66f9ea4032585
