Innocent man acquitted of killing former Fettes College teacher Peter Coshan

A 65-year-old man was recently acquitted of murdering a retired teacher from Fettes College, but he was found guilty of perverting the course of justice by disposing of the body and providing misleading information to the authorities. The accused, Paul Black, along with his flatmate, Paul McNaughton, allegedly hatched a plan to steal a substantial amount of money from the victim, Peter Coshan, through a catfishing scheme. Despite being implicated in the crime, Black was absolved of wrongdoing in the teacher's death, while the jury found him guilty of obstructing justice. Peter Coshan, a former biology instructor, met a tragic end at Black's residence in Leith after being lured there by McNaughton using a fake profile created on the dating platform Gaydar. McNaughton later confessed to orchestrating the murder and obstructing the investigation. In contrast, Black's involvement was limited to helping conceal the body and providing false details to the police during their inquiries into the disappearance of Coshan. The accused acknowledged his complicity in covering up the crime, which included keeping the body hidden beneath a bed and utilizing the victim's bank cards. Following the murder, the two perpetrators secretly transported Coshan's body to Northumberland, where they attempted to dig a burial site at a remote location between Otterburn and Belsay before abandoning it against a wall. Although Black was ultimately absolved of homicide charges, the jury found him to be culpable for perverting the course of justice. Judge Lord Scott cautioned Black that he would face a lengthy prison sentence for his offense, noting that comparable cases had previously garnered up to six years of incarceration. In a statement released through law enforcement, Coshan's family expressed their gratitude to those who have supported them during this harrowing ordeal. The family members extended their appreciation for the outpouring of assistance they have received, describing it as an exemplary display of humanity. They lamented the despicable manner in which their cherished relative, a vulnerable septuagenarian, had been treated, vowing that they would never be the same following his senseless demise. The sentencing for both Black and McNaughton is set for June 17th, with Judge Lord Scott impressing upon Black the gravity of his crime and the severe consequences awaiting him.
