Dr. Munro-Knight engages in discussions with officials from Liberia

On Monday, May 13, 2024, the final day of the Sankofa Pilgrimage to Barbados, a significant meeting took place between Liberian Cultural Ambassador Juli Endee, journalist Rodney Sieh, and Minister with responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight, and her team at the Division of Culture in Haggatt Hall, St. Michael. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen cultural ties between Liberia and Barbados and explore potential opportunities for collaboration. Ambassador Endee shared her experiences in Barbados and expressed her deep appreciation for the warm hospitality and enthusiasm shown by the Barbadian people during the Sankofa Pilgrimage week of activities. Minister Munro-Knight acknowledged the importance of furthering the relationship between the two countries and highlighted the need for Barbadians to visit Liberia to continue the work initiated through the Sankofa Pilgrimage. During the meeting, Program Advisor for Reparations and Economic Enfranchisement, Rodney Grant, emphasized the significance of reclaiming African identity and culture. Grant highlighted ongoing projects in Barbados aimed at building memorialization and consciousness, including symbolic gestures like renaming monuments and locations to reflect post-slavery narratives. Director of the Barbados Library Service, Jennifer Yarde, discussed an upcoming initiative for Africa Day celebrations on May 24, where 10 schools will engage in a virtual cultural exchange with students from Liberia, Nigeria, and Gambia. The meeting also saw journalist Rodney Sieh offering to leverage his connections with radio stations to amplify the outreach of this initiative and document the process from an alternative perspective. Ambassador Endee proposed ideas for cultural amalgamation through dance and song, suggesting the establishment of a mini museum to commemorate the Sankofa Pilgrimage. The discussions culminated in Ambassador Endee presenting traditional Liberian handcrafted pieces to Minister Munro-Knight. The meeting concluded with an air of excitement about the potential for deepened cultural ties and mutual benefit between Liberia and Barbados. Both parties expressed eagerness to continue these conversations and embark on collaborative projects in the near future. Chief Executive Officer of the National Cultural Foundation, Carol Roberts-Reifer; Chief Archivist, Ingrid Thompson; and Director of Culture, Policy and Research, Dr. Donna Greene-Rusnighi, also attended the meeting. Minister Munro-Knight lauded early plans to create a museum in Liberia and suggested that Barbados could contribute to this initiative, thereby completing its own research and creating a comprehensive portrait of the 346 persons who left the country in 1865 to emigrate to Liberia. The emphasis was on fostering a deeper understanding of the shared history and heritage between the two countries. The cultural exchange through dance, song, and the proposed mini museum aimed to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of both nations and promote unity and collaboration. The meeting marked a significant step in the cultural diplomacy efforts between Liberia and Barbados. The exchange of ideas and plans for future collaborations showcased the commitment of both parties to strengthening their cultural ties. The potential for joint projects and initiatives in the fields of education, heritage preservation, and cultural exchange held promise for a mutually beneficial relationship. As discussions concluded, it was evident that the meeting had set the stage for continued dialogue and partnership between Liberia and Barbados, reflecting a shared commitment to honoring their shared history and cultural heritage. https://therealcrimediary.com/dr-munro-knight-engages-in-discussions-with-officials-from-liberia/?feed_id=51255&_unique_id=6654e6c548972
